Me and Colleague Rika Ito Presenting at Popular Culture Association 2021

Well, the Popular Culture Association conference has officially kicked off! I attended some of the morning panels and I’ve been really happy with how things are being navigated. It was really easy to participate and I’m looking forward to experiencing the rest of this virtual conference. This year, I’m doing something new. I’ve been working on a project related Ainu representation in Noda Satoru’s Golden Kamuy for the better part of a year and this will be my first time presenting with Food Studies! I’ve been thinking a lot about the role of indigenous food in the show and its connections to real-life tourism and I’m hoping to get useful feedback for the article I am currently working on. My St. Olaf College colleague, Rika Ito, is also presenting her work looking at the role of language and gender in the show. We have been collaborating together this past year and I’m excited that we are both at the point where we are able to present our work.

FOOD IN POPULAR CULTURE III: Race, Gender, & Ethnicity in Food

Rika Ito will be presenting her work on the Asian Popular Culture II: Japan–Anime, Manga panel on June 4th, 2021, 5:00 PM – 6:20 PM EST! So don’t miss that if you are interested in the topic. Our papers work really well with one another even though we are on different panels.
